Phil and his buddy and partner Wal, as profiled just below him on this menu, came as a double act, I think it was when Rob Stalker left the band under a cloud and Ricky Dunford had gone as well, so Paul brought in Phil and Wal, who as I remember it had been in a club band themselves (were they called the Martians?) and then moved over to do sound and lights for the Gents.

They used to have this joke did Phil and Wal, that bad things used to happen whenever they went to places with ironic names, places like Wallsend and Walsgrave, you know the sort of thing, and then the van would break down or something!

Phil as I remember it was a bit of an electrician and when the band decamped to Driffield for recording sessions at the Slaughterhouse courtesy of Mr Webster, Phil got a lot of work off him as house electrician at the studio and when the band packed it Phil stayed up in Driffield doing that work for a number of years.
